Speaking at the opening ceremony of Dresden University Week held with the presence of political and security deputy governor of Fars, chancellor of Technical University of Dresden (TUD), and some TUD faculty members and directors, Mayor Eskandarpour said “Dresden University Week is a major turning point in the relationship of Shiraz and Dresden Universities and marks the beginning of a long-term collaboration and communication of the two cities of Shiraz and Dresden. In line with it, academic exchanges are important plans of Shiraz University to collaborate and cooperate with other international bodies and cities.”
“Fostering the relationship and linkage between urban management and university,” he added, is very crucial "to ensure the right forward-planning and right orientation of development activities. I welcome and support this event and any other similar events which may facilitate and foster our development.”
Emphasizing the need for using scientific works and studies done in urban management domain, he continued “adopting knowledge- and science-based approaches is a major means to achieve the ultimate goal of urban management that is sustainable development. Regarding cultural development, academic morale such as critical thinking, tolerance etc. should be taken into account since city administrators and managers all over the world found that environment, economy and social affairs which are traditionally known as the pillars of sustainable development are laid on culture.”
Also, Dr. Nadgaran, the chancellor of Shiraz University (SU), referred to SU as one the three top major Iranian universities. He said “whereas Technical University of Dresden enjoys a high capacity and potential, we hope this event pave the way for the cooperation of both cities particularly in student and teacher transfer and conducting joint research projects.” Referring to the presence of Dresden Mayor, Dr. Hilbert, in Shiraz, he continued “I hope we witness the promotion of urban and trade cooperation between these two cities.”
The political and security deputy governor of Fars, Mr. Pajohesh, in his speech pinpoint the some features of Fars province including the climate, population, and so more. He said “Fars province warmly welcomes all scholars, academics and experts in different areas of science. Shiraz University is an excellent venue to host scientific events.”
Having thanked the organizers of TUD Week in Shiraz, Dr. Hilbert said “Dresden is a clever, growing, loveable and environmentally aware city. Like Dresden, nature and lifestyle go hand in hand in Shiraz.” He also considered the role of culture so important. He continued “Europe is currently faced with great challenges such as economic and social inequalities, populist tendencies, etc., but art and culture can server as mediators and standing up to the challenges and bring people together.”
Based on a previously agreed upon schedule, cultural exchanges and urban environmental cooperation will be the core of both parties’ bilateral talks in the forthcoming days.
