Shiraz Nominated as World Craft City
Receiving a high-level delegation from the World Crafts Council (WCC), the Mayor of Shiraz, Heidar Eskandarpour, said “to promote the handicrafts, the economic aspect of it should be taken into consideration. Opening the Art Market can serve this purpose.”
He continued “Shiraz has its own school of art in different art and cultural spheres. We are pleased that inscribing Shiraz as the World City of Handicrafts shall provide people around the world with the opportunity to know the high art potentials of Shiraz.”
Ghada Hijjawi-Qaddumi, president of WCC Asia-Pacific Region, said “the City of Officials and people of Shiraz will have a weighty responsibility after being inscribed in the list of World Crafts City.” Having emphasized that four Iranian cities had applied for being recognized as the World Cities of Crafts, she said “the candidacy of cities of Zanjan, Malayer and Ghasemabad shows that Iranian people would like to introduce their country as the a cultural one regardless of the international and political issues.”
She added “work, insurance, etc. conditions are the criteria based on which the applications shall be considered.”
The meeting was also attended by Dr. Pooya Mahmoodiyan deputy Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism minister, the ministry’s provincial officials, and Ahmed Alfarsi, the representative of West Asia of WCC.
